Newsletter

The Forum Newsletter is published bi-monthly, except July and August, for a total of five issues annually. It features informative articles on the latest developments in genealogical methodology, resources, finding aids, repositories, and historical topics relevant to Irish family history research. Each issue also contains a beginning genealogy column, a queries page, items of interest from other sources, and a review of our monthly presentations.

Many of our members are unable to attend meetings and their membership in our organization is due primarily to the excellence of the newsletter. Our series on the Roman Catholic Parishes in the five boroughs of New York City - which includes the starting dates, current contact information and map location for each parish - has earned mention in several genealogical publications for its value in determining the parish our ancestors most likely attended at a particular point in time.

Background

In September 1991 the inaugural issue of the newsletter was mailed to our members. The organization had just been founded the previous month as the Long Island Chapter of a prominent Minnesota based genealogy group. This association was reflected in the newsletter's original title - Long Island Sept, the Irish Genealogical Society. The September 1993 issue was the first to bear our current name, The Irish Family History Forum, reflecting our new status as an independent organization.

From its founding in 1991 through June 1997 the newsletter was published monthly, except July and August, a total of sixty issues. Autumn 1997 marked the transition to a larger bi-monthly publication, and in May/June 1999 our first Special Theme Issue premiered.
